Grading and Late work

Let’s Learn Together

Grading

I will be grading, mostly for skill development, but there will be projects, quizzes, and tests.  This means that grades are mostly assigned to Standards, not individual assignment titles.  This also means that the grades are flexible, at any point a student’s grade can go up or down, depending on the progression of their skill development and progression,  according to the standards. This also fosters a Growth Mindset, allowing students to continually demonstrate a growing mastery of skill and content. This means that if you do not do well on a specific skill or strategy, on the first try, you can make that up.  Smart Block is the best way to do this.

I also do not give out 100’s, unless the assignment has a Rubric which totals 100 points.  When it comes to essay writing, it is difficult to give a 100 in ELA class. These two grading policies  move away from thinking along the terms of "A", "B" etc.. This is not where the focus of a 7th grade student should be.  The focus should be on the growth and development of skills, not a letter grade!

Late work is defined as any work that was not turned in during the class period on the day it was due.  The impact on grades will be determined by grade level/subject PLTs. Deadlines for student make up work are stated below.
