Introduction

Dear parents and families,

I am excited to be part of the opening of Apex Friendship Middle School, with you and your student!

I would like to take a moment to introduce myself. In the second grade I was diagnosed with Dyslexia, and in the fifth grade I suffered a traumatic brain injury causing permanent memory loss, so I understand, and can sympathize with those who have a variety of learning styles and challenges. I also understand that success is possible through hard work, and challenging yourself to apply what you learn.

I have been teaching since graduating from Salve Regina University in 1997, where I received my Bachelor's Degrees in Education and English. After graduation I worked with Autistic adults in a job training program. From there I taught in the public, private, and independent school systems, supporting student with a range of executive functioning, reading, and writing deficits.

I have extensive experience in curriculum development, behavior management, and mentoring students of all ages. I am particularly drawn to supporting students who are underperforming and working in partnership with teachers, school staff, and families to develop differentiated curriculum that supports all my students.

As part of my Master's in Language and Literacy, from Simmons College, I completed my training as a Reading Specialist and am certified in the Wilson Reading and Project Read methodologies. I have also trained and worked with Dr. Bonnie Singer, who developed the EmPOWER method for teaching expository writing and Brain Frames, organized Graphic Organizers..

I am a firm believer that the better I know your student, the more effectively I can teach her/ him. Please feel free to email me throughout the year. Our goal:  mine, yours, and your student’s, is to ensure your student grows both intellectually, personally, and emotionally during her/his 7th grade year.
